Is It Safe to Install Underground Electrical Wires?

By John Karbowski · October 24, 2024

Underground electrical wiring is safe when done correctly — with the right wire type, proper burial depth, appropriate conduit, and correct installation methods. For commercial facilities requiring power to outbuildings, parking lot lighting, signage, or distant equipment, underground wiring is often the cleanest and most durable solution.

Underground Wire Types

UF-B Cable (Underground Feeder)

Suitable for direct burial without conduit. The plastic sheathing is rated for direct soil contact. Used for branch circuits serving outbuildings, landscape lighting, and similar applications at 120V or 240V.

THWN-2 / XHHW-2 in Conduit

Standard conductors rated for wet locations, installed in PVC or rigid metal conduit. This is the preferred method for commercial applications as it protects conductors, allows wire replacement without excavation, and provides mechanical protection.

USE-2 Cable

Underground Service Entrance cable rated for direct burial. Used primarily for service entrances and larger feeder runs between transformers and buildings.

NEC Burial Depth Requirements

Direct-buried UF cable (120V, 20A GFCI) 12 inches minimum
Direct-buried UF cable (other circuits) 24 inches minimum
PVC conduit (any voltage) 18 inches minimum
Rigid metal conduit (any voltage) 6 inches minimum
Under concrete slab 4 inches minimum

Critical Safety Requirements

  • Call 811 before any excavation to locate buried utilities
  • Install warning tape above buried conduit runs
  • All underground circuits must be GFCI protected per NEC
  • Properly waterproof all underground junction boxes
  • Use only listed fittings for underground conduit connections
  • Pull permits and schedule inspections as required by local code
