What Is a PLC?

A Programmable Logic Controller is a digital computer used in industrial settings to automate tasks, control machinery, and enhance overall system efficiency. PLCs are popular for their versatility, scalability, and ease of programming, making them the backbone of many industrial processes — from conveyor systems and assembly lines to HVAC controls and process automation.

Key Steps in PLC Installation

System Assessment & Requirements Analysis

Define the processes to be automated, identify all inputs and outputs, and determine the control requirements. This stage establishes the foundation for all subsequent decisions.

PLC Selection

Choose the right PLC hardware based on the number of I/O points, communication requirements, processing speed, and environmental conditions of the installation site.

Control Panel Design & Fabrication

Design the control enclosure layout, including the PLC, power supplies, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, and communication modules. Fabricate and wire the panel according to UL standards.

Field Wiring Installation

Run conduit and pull wire from the control panel to all field devices — sensors, limit switches, motor starters, solenoids, and actuators. Label all conductors per NEC requirements.

PLC Programming

Develop the ladder logic or structured text program that implements the desired control sequences, interlocks, alarms, and operator interface elements.

System Testing & Commissioning

Test all I/O points, verify wiring, run the program in simulation mode, then perform a controlled live startup to validate all sequences before turning over to production.

Operator Training & Documentation

Train operations and maintenance personnel on the new system. Provide complete as-built drawings, program documentation, and spare parts lists.
